In this week’s spotlight, we delve into the world of microneedling, a revolutionary cosmetic procedure that has become a buzzword in the beauty industry, also my very favourite beauty procedure. Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive treatment that promises to improve the appearance of scars, acne, and wrinkles by encouraging collagen production using tiny, sterilised needles. This Revolutionary treatment deliveres amazing results that are noticeable even after one session.

Microneedling stimulates collagen production by creating micro-punctures in the skin using miniature, sterilized needles. The skin’s healing process after microneedling can help reduce the appearance of scars and dark spots and improve skin elasticity. Beauticians usually recommend this treatment after assessing your skin condition to ensure that your skin requirements are meet.

The Advantages of Microneedling Microneedling has gained popularity for its growing list of benefits. It rejuvenates and plumps the skin with minimal discomfort and downtime, and it can be adjusted to fit each person’s needs. It can improve the appearance of acne scars, fine lines, enlarged pores, hyperpigmentation, and wrinkles. It enhances skin elasticity and can even help with stretch marks. It’s also less expensive than laser therapy and poses fewer risks for people with darker skin tones.

The Microneedling Procedure In a typical microneedling session, a doctor applies a topical anesthetic to numb the skin and then uses a pen-like tool with tiny, sterilized needles to make small pricks under the skin. They usually finish your session by applying a growth serum or calming treatment. The entire procedure lasts approximately 2 hours.

Aftercare and Recovery After microneedling, your skin may be irritated and red for a few days.

You should avoid sun exposure, alpha-hydroxy acids, retinol, alcohol-based products makeup, and sweating during the first week of recovery. To aid healing, and stay hydrated, use an antioxidant serum, a cooling mask, and collagen-stimulating peptides. Risks and Side Effects of Microneedling Like all cosmetic procedures, microneedling carries some risks. A common side effect is minor skin irritation immediately after the procedure. You may also see redness for a few days. Severe side effects that need medical treatment, such as bleeding, bruising, infection, and peeling, are rare.

Who Should Avoid Microneedling? People with skin conditions such as psoriasis or eczema, open wounds or active acne, recent radiation therapy, or a history of skin scars may not be ideal candidates for microneedling. Pregnant people should consult an obstetrician or gynecologist before undergoing the procedure.

Microneedling Sessions for Acne Scars For treating post-acne scarring, research has shown mild improvement after just two microneedling sessions. After six sessions, people saw moderate improvement in their skin texture and a significant enhancement of scar appearance.

Despite its numerous benefits, it's important to remember that microneedling is not a one-size-fits-all solution. The number of sessions required and the results achieved can vary based on individual skin type and condition.
